Casino Game Contribution: How Bonus Wagering Works

A R100 bet does not always count as R100 of bonus wagering. See how 100%, 10% and 0% game contribution changes the turnover credited to your wagering requirement.

Casino game contribution is the percentage of each qualifying bet that counts towards a bonus wagering requirement. It matters because a R100 bet does not always reduce your wagering balance by R100. If a game contributes 10%, that R100 stake reduces the requirement by only R10; at 0%, it reduces it by nothing.

For South African players comparing casino bonuses, the key point is that contribution rules are set by the specific operator and promotion. There is no universal rule saying every slot counts 100% or every roulette bet counts 5%. Always read the current promotion terms before playing.

How casino game contribution works

Suppose you have R5,000 of wagering left. The contribution percentage changes the amount of eligible betting needed to clear that target:

Game contribution Actual qualifying bets needed for R5,000 credited wagering
100% R5,000
50% R10,000
20% R25,000
10% R50,000
5% R100,000
0% Cannot reduce the target

The calculation is:

Remaining wagering ÷ contribution rate = qualifying betting needed

For example, R3,000 remaining at 10% contribution means R3,000 ÷ 0.10 = R30,000 of qualifying bets. At 100%, the same R3,000 target needs R3,000 of qualifying betting.

This is turnover, not a prediction of losses. You can win or lose during the sequence of bets, and completing wagering does not guarantee that you finish with money to withdraw.

If the multiplier itself is confusing, start with our 30x wagering requirement guide.

Contribution rates are not universal

Contribution tables can differ sharply between operators and even between promotions at the same operator. A useful real-world example is 10Bet's published games-bonus rules, which currently list different contribution percentages for slots, poker/Sicbo, blackjack/baccarat/craps/crash games, and roulette/game shows. The important lesson is not to memorise those percentages for every casino; it is to check the terms attached to the bonus you are actually claiming.

A promotion can also exclude individual titles even when their broader game category normally contributes. The casino lobby accepting your wager does not prove that the bet qualifies for promotional turnover.

For current offers, compare the terms behind the headline in our casino bonuses South Africa guide rather than judging a promotion only by its percentage or maximum bonus.

Slots, table games, live casino and crash games

Slots often receive the highest contribution rate in casino promotions, but some titles or providers can be excluded. Check the eligible-games list instead of assuming that every slot contributes in full.

Blackjack, baccarat, roulette and other table games commonly receive reduced contribution or may be excluded. This matters because a low contribution percentage can multiply the amount of turnover required. If a promotion gives blackjack 10% contribution, R1,000 of eligible blackjack stakes would credit only R100 towards wagering.

Live casino games can have their own rules. A promotion might group live blackjack with blackjack, treat live dealer games separately, or exclude them. The same caution applies to crash games such as Aviator: some promotions give crash games reduced or zero contribution, while another promotion may use a different table.

The only reliable answer is the contribution schedule for the specific offer.

What happens with a 0% contribution game?

A 0% game can create an especially confusing situation. The casino may allow you to open the game and place a bet, yet the wagering tracker does not move at all. If R5,000 remains and you place R1,000 of bets on a 0%-contribution title, you can still have R5,000 of wagering left afterwards.

There is another distinction to check: 0% contribution does not automatically mean the game is permitted with bonus funds. Some terms simply say bets do not count; others exclude certain games entirely or impose consequences for using them while a bonus is active. Read both the contribution table and excluded-games rules.

Why game contribution changes the turnover needed

Hot Hot Fruit RTP guide artwork

Imagine two promotions each advertise a R1,000 bonus with 30x bonus-only wagering. Both start with a nominal R30,000 turnover requirement.

If eligible play contributes 100%, R30,000 of qualifying stakes completes that requirement. At 20%, R150,000 of qualifying stakes would be needed to generate the same R30,000 of credited wagering. At 10%, it would take R300,000.

That does not mean a player is expected to lose those amounts. It demonstrates how contribution changes the amount of betting activity required and therefore the exposure to normal gambling variance and the house edge.

This is why contribution belongs alongside the wagering multiplier, expiry period and maximum bet when assessing bonus terms. Our casino deposit bonus guide explains how these conditions fit together.

Maximum bets, excluded games and bonus cancellation

Contribution is only one rule. Many casino promotions also specify a maximum stake while wagering is active. A game could contribute 100% but a wager above the promotional maximum may breach the terms.

Similarly, an excluded game may be different from a low-contribution game. A low-contribution game still credits some qualifying turnover; an excluded game may credit nothing or may not be permitted under the bonus rules at all.

Before playing, check:

  • what amount the wagering multiplier applies to;
  • which games and providers are eligible;
  • the contribution percentage for each category;
  • the maximum permitted bet;
  • excluded games or betting patterns;
  • the time allowed to finish wagering;
  • maximum conversion or cashout limits; and
  • what happens if you withdraw or cancel the bonus early.

Our maximum cashout guide covers payout caps, while the casino bonus balance guide explains why cash and promotional balances may be treated differently.

Can low-risk betting clear wagering cheaply?

Do not assume that placing opposing or very low-risk bets is a shortcut. Bonus terms can restrict betting patterns designed primarily to recycle turnover, and table-game contribution is often reduced precisely because different games have different mathematical characteristics.

Roulette is a useful example. A player might think covering both red and black creates an easy way to generate turnover, but zero can still cause a loss and the promotion may give roulette a low contribution rate or restrict hedge-style play. Even without a specific prohibition, repeated wagering still exposes the balance to the game's house edge.

The practical approach is to use a bonus only if you are comfortable with its rules and would have played within your budget anyway. Do not increase stakes simply to finish wagering before an expiry deadline.

How to check a contribution table before claiming

First, open the full promotion terms rather than relying on the banner. Find the section covering wagering, game weighting, contribution or eligible games. Confirm whether the multiplier applies to the bonus only, deposit plus bonus, winnings from free spins, or another defined amount.

Then check the contribution rate for the games you actually intend to play. If the terms name excluded titles or providers, treat those exclusions as more specific than a general category such as “slots 100%”. Finally, note the maximum bet, expiry and withdrawal consequences before opting in.

Take a screenshot or retain the promotion terms if the offer is important to you. Terms can change, and having the wording that applied when you opted in can make a support query easier to explain.

Worked South African example

Aviator strategy guide artwork

Suppose a player deposits R500 and receives a R500 casino bonus. The terms state 30x wagering on the bonus amount, so the initial requirement is:

R500 × 30 = R15,000

If the chosen eligible slots contribute 100%, R15,000 of qualifying slot stakes would generate R15,000 of wagering credit. If a table-game category contributes 10%, the theoretical amount of eligible stakes required to generate R15,000 of credit becomes R150,000.

Now add a maximum promotional bet of R100. Even if the game interface permits a R200 stake, the player would need to remain within the R100 bonus limit while the promotion is active. The contribution percentage does not override that separate rule.

The example shows why a single headline such as “30x wagering” cannot describe the whole promotion.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my wagering tracker not moving after I place bets?

Check whether the game is excluded or has a reduced or 0% contribution rate. Also confirm that the promotion is active and that the wagers meet its eligibility rules. If the tracker still looks wrong, stop wagering and ask the operator to explain how the bets were credited.

Can a slot have less than 100% contribution?

Yes. Slots often receive high contribution, but a promotion can reduce the rate or exclude particular titles or providers. The specific promotion terms take priority over general assumptions about slots.

Does a 0% contribution game use my bonus balance?

Possibly, but contribution and balance rules are separate. A game may be playable without reducing the wagering target, while another promotion may prohibit bonus play on that game entirely. Check both the game-contribution and excluded-games clauses.

Does a maximum bet change the contribution percentage?

Usually these are separate rules. A game might contribute 100%, but you can still breach the promotion if your individual stake exceeds the stated maximum bet. Both conditions need to be followed.

Are Aviator and other crash games included in casino wagering?

There is no universal answer. Some promotions reduce or exclude crash-game contribution, while others use different rules. Check the current terms for the exact bonus rather than assuming that all crash games are treated alike.

Responsible bonus use

Wagering requirements encourage repeated betting, so set a cash budget before claiming a promotion and do not chase the wagering meter with money you cannot afford to lose. A large bonus is not free cash and completing the requirement does not guarantee a profit.

If the required turnover, contribution rules or expiry make an offer uncomfortable, skipping the bonus is a valid option.

Source and verification note

Contribution percentages can change by operator and promotion. BestCasinoSA uses operator terms for examples and does not treat one casino's contribution table as an industry-wide standard. For a current operator example, see 10Bet's official games rules. Always verify the promotion you intend to claim because its rules may differ.
